You can help families keep more of their own money this tax season by becoming a Volunteer Tax Counselor. The Tax Coalition of the Financial Stability Partnership needs volunteers to help provide free income tax preparation in 2010. In 2009, volunteers prepared almost 500 federal and state returns with total refunds of over $350,000 – and clients kept every penny of their refunds!
We are looking for volunteers who are willing to spend at least 3 hours a week helping families file their 2009 federal and state income taxes. The Coalition is also looking for churches, organizations and businesses that are willing to host these free tax sites at their location. Training will be provided by the Coalition and the Ohio Benefit Bank free of charge.
Volunteers assist clients in completing tax forms on the computer, then e-file the federal and state returns. Since volunteers are not paid, they are not responsible or held liable for mistakes on the tax return. Prior tax knowledge is not required, but familiarity with computers is highly recommended. Volunteers are also needed in the United Way office to help schedule appointments.
